Relations of Uncertainty. Popular Quantum Physics, the “Postmodern Turn”, and the Cultural Logics of Translation
This project is concerned with the so-called “postmodern turn” in the Humanities, which will be analyzed from the point of view of Cultural History and Theoretical History. This transitional phase, which still affects us today, is relevant in a particular focus: The remarkably frequent references to concepts and models from quantum physics. In this cultural appropriation, concepts such as relativity, indeterminacy or interdependence took center stage within a project to overcome the modern episteme, and seemed to provide the necessary impetus for the re-orientation of thinking within the Humanities. The project aims at investigating the forms and mechanisms of cultural translation used in these inter-disciplinary bridges, and will highlight the ‘mediation services’ of popular physics.
Eva Johach holds a Ph.D.and Habilitation (venia legendi) in cultural history from the Humboldt University Berlin. One focus of her scholarly work is on the processes of circulation and (metaphorical) transfer between and beyond academic disciplines and the social imagination. Recently, she has been working on “alternative realities” and the cultures of consciousness from the 1950’s to the 1990’s.

„Transgressing Boundaries“: Unter diesem Titel parodierte Alan Sokal Mitte der 1990er-Jahre die verbreiteten Versuche, die Quantenphysik für eine „postmoderne“ Auffassung von Wissenschaft und Wirklichkeit in Anspruch zu nehmen. Was dem Physiker Sokal nur als illegitime Grenzüberschreitung erscheinen konnte, möchte Eva Johach unter dem Gesichtspunkt kultureller Übersetzung neu beleuchten.
