Translation into Persian has played a crucial role in modern Iranian history—not only transforming the Persian language but also effecting cultural, social, and political change. At the same time, it has been increasingly viewed as problematic. This talk introduces the role and the problem of translation in contemporary Iran.

Two related viewpoints might be distinguished regarding the role of translation into Persian in contemporary Iran. We could, on the one hand, ask about impact: how does translation into Persian contribute to cultural and linguistic transformation, to the modernization of both language and society in Iran? On the other hand, we could consider translation into Persian as a cultural or linguistic phenomenon: how does Iranian society represent itself through the act of translation from other languages into Persian? And what are the difficulties, cultural as well as linguistic, that translation into Persian is faced with in contemporary Iran? This talk outlines both viewpoints and comments on the questions outlined here.
