Beyond the Ground. The Audiovisual Essay as an Experimental Site of Knowledge Construction and Its Power to Affect

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

How can the politics of verticality (the histories, policies, regulations, and infrastructures, as well as the environmental and anthropocentric changes that occur on the vertical plane) help us understand the present moment? Beyond the Ground is a research-based artistic project dealing with the poorly legislated spaces that exist beyond the horizon line: aerial spaces and underground spaces. With an interdisciplinary, feminist, and anti-capitalist approach, the examination of these spaces will be materialized in two audiovisual essays. These essays will provide a critical reflection upon the configuration of forces involved in acts of territorialization and their material consequences. In addition to these artistic works, Enar de Dios Rodríguez will also produce a theoretical framework in order to demonstrate the research potential of the audiovisual essay medium. This will involve analyzing formal, narrative, and aesthetic techniques employed in contemporary essay films.

As the Air Becomes Explicit and the Essay Grows into a Succession of Images

This lecture focuses on an interdisciplinary investigation of air space and the artistic methodology being applied to it. In a first step, the artistic medium used—the audiovisual essay—will be clarified through a series of possible definitions.
